Moved to Substack
The Interurban Canopy is now on Substack. After giving Patch Labs a three month trial period, I’ve decided to move The Interurban Canopy to Substack. Many of my favorite local journalists are on Substack now and I haven’t found a single journalist on Patch Labs I want to follow. I’d love to see Patch Labs succeed as a company - a local news focused website platform would make a great fit for what I’m passionate about: local news. But I ran into a number of things that are simply broken on this platform and my repeated emailed requests for support went unanswered. After three months, the Patch Labs email newsletter feature never sent a single email to my subscribers. This, I would argue, is the most basic functionality a local news site needs and repeated email requests for help were never answered. Patch Labs also doesn’t support RSS which matters to some readers. Another complaint is the text post content editor which makes uploading and including images in stories difficult. Instead of simply copy-and-paste the story from my text editor as other content platforms allow, on Patch Labs an author must individually upload each image and include it manually. Time consuming, frustrating, error prone, and not scalable at all. Substack simply has all these technical features implemented.
